The concert opens with a musical pastiche, Moz-art à la Haydn, by Alfred Schnittke, based on a nearly lost fragment by Mozart and an homage to Haydn’s Farewell Symphony. The rest of the evening is pure Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: his Violin Concerto, with violin soloist and concertmaster Krzysztof Kuznik; his beloved Eine Kleine Nachtmusik; and lastly the dramatic and forward-looking Symphony No. 40.
Gian Carlo Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors was written for television. It premiered live on December 24th, 1951 on the same stage that now hosts SNL. This chamber opera has been a holiday favorite ever since. The cast for our performance includes local talent in the leads: boy soprano Henry Brauweiler and soprano Mary Petro Noonan. The evening concludes with our traditional caroling and holiday orchestral favorites.
Two shows on Sunday December 5, at 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
