Debussy — Sirènes from Nocturnes
Liszt — Piano Concerto No. 2
Beethoven — Symphony No. 3 "Eroica"
We present Debussy, Liszt, and Beethoven, each one of whom “flung his spear far into the future.” Claude Debussy’s Sirènes (1899) is a haunting tableau of color scored for orchestra and women’s chorus that points the way to modern 20th century music. Franz Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto, performed by young virtuoso Alex Beyer, discards conventional form and shuffles musical themes into new and unexpected sequences. We end the concert with Beethoven’s Third Symphony, the opening bars of which tell us the world has changed and more is to come.
