The Conservation Commission
is responsible maintaining an inventory of natural resources throughout
the City. The Conservation Commission provides an inventory and plan
for open space, guidance on the preservation and conservation of natural
resources, and distribution of basic environmental education materials.
The Commission comments regarding impacts to natural resources on application
referrals from other land use agencies .
The Conservation Commission also acts as the Inland Wetland Agency of the City of Norwalk. This Agency is responsible for protecting inland wetlands and watercourses in the City of Norwalk and enforcing all laws and regulations which govern development activity in the vicinity of such areas. The Agency makes decisions on wetland permits and periodically updates the Inland Wetland Map. The Agency staff inspects sites to ensure compliance with the terms of permits issued and provide land use guidance to property owners who own land in or adjacent to inland wetlands or watercourses. The Aquifer Protection Agency regulates certain high-risk land uses that occur within the defined area (the Aquifer Protection Area) that contributes water to the City's public drinking water supply wells. The Agency protects the City's drinking water supply by requiring best management practices by these high-risk uses and minimizing the chances of contamination of our valuable drinking water. |
