The Norwalk Animal Control Shelter is in a newly built facility. The dogs have access to indoor shelter as well covered outdoor access. The shelter is run by the city of Norwalk under the umbrella of the Norwalk Police Department. Most dogs that come in have no medical or behavioral history. Dogs are handled by Animal Control Officers and volunteers to evaluate temperament.

The Animal Control Division enforces local laws pertaining to the keeping of dogs, cats and other animals. In addition, it supervises dog adoptions when pets are not claimed by their owners. We do not house cats at the shelter.

Licenses
Each owner or keeper of a dog of the age of six months or over, except dogs kept under a kennel license, is required to have a dog license and wear a collar and tag at all times, licenses are renewed annually on or before June 30th at the Town Clerk's office or at the Norwalk Animal Control Shelter.
A dog without a tag is presumed to be unlicensed and is not protected by law. A tag must not be used on any dog other then the dog described in the license bearing the corresponding number. You are liable for damage done by your dog. Owners of roaming dogs are liable to prosecution. When a spayed or neutered dog is licensed for the first time, a certificate of neutering or spaying from a licensed veterinarian must be presented. All dogs must be vaccinated against rabies and owners must submit a rabies certificate to the Town Clerk or Norwalk Animal Control Shelter when licensing their dog. Payment at the Norwalk Animal Control Shelter can only be made by personal check or money order.
